Photo of Marilyn Fithian

Marilyn Fithian, Ph.D.

Past President, 1993

Marilyn remained curious about sex for her entire 87 years. She knew early in childhood that she wanted to be a sex researcher---even before she knew what a sexologist was. Marilyn was the ultimate collector and flea marketeer. Her home was a warren of books, boxes, research data and erotic folk art collections.

Fithian was a mother of four who went back to school, where she began her forty year collaboration with Bill Hartman at Cal State University Long Beach. Together they interviewed 2,600 people in 150 nudist camps, and in 1970 published Nudist Society.

In 1965, Hartman and Fithian opened the Center for Marital and Sexual Studies in Long Beach, where they were known as the Masters and Johnson of the West. As sex therapists, Marilyn and Bill treated the disabled and they were the first to treat single young women. They worked as a dual sex therapy team where they incorporated detailed sex histories, sensate focus exercises, sexological evaluations, journaling, MMPIs and other teaching tools. Marilyn and Bill gathered data on the sexual performance of 751 subjects, 282 men and 469 women. They completed 10,000 hours worth of observations over two decades, and co-authored Treatment of Sexual Dysfunction and Any Man Can.

Bill and Marilyn lived together for thirty years. They finally planned to marry when they were in their 70s, but Bill died before the wedding and Marilyn wore her wedding dress to his funeral. Marilyn Fithian died on September 11, 2008.
